What a Fun Day around the Ogunquit Area!

This was such a great day!  We changed our plans because of today's weather forecast.  We had planned to take a ferry ride to Peaks Island, but it was fogged in this morning and they were predicting storms and no sunshine.  So when Sam and Kathy got to the CG at 10, we decided to head south to check out some of the coastal villages and beach areas.

Ken and I had also checked out the possibility of staying another week in this Moody Beach CG instead of moving on to New Hampshire as planned.  The weather next week in this area looks so warm and sunny and we have so many places we would like to explore further.  Also, we really want to go to the beaches to look for sea glass and haven't been able to do much of that so far on this trip.  After talking to Sam and Kathy to determine what they were planning for the next week, we confirmed our reservations to stay here and cancelled the ones for Sandy Beach in New Hampshire.  Sam and Kathy had decided not to go to New Hampshire, but will stay an extra night here so we can do the Ferry Ride on Sunday when the weather should be perfect for the trip.

We drove scenic Route 1A along the coastline to the little village of York.  Spent time walking the beach area (it was raining lightly) and then walked the streets checking out the shoppes.  This area is so "user friendly", as the food, merchandise, and parking are all very reasonable.  We really liked this place!

Short Sand Beach in York!

If you look closely, Kathy and I are holding our umbrellas
while looking for sea glass.  We found many pieces here, but
most of them were fairly small.

This is an old soda fountain and candy sore in York!

From there we continue the coastal drive to see the Dubble Lighthouse, one of the most painted and photographed lighthouses in the world.  It was built in 1879 for $15,000. and its light is visible for 13 miles.  What a beautiful site!

Dubble Lighthouse!  You can't go on the island, but it is a beautiful
site.  Not the cable care on the left of the lighthouse keepers home!

Then on to Harbor Beach at York Harbor where we did the 1/2 mile Cliff Walk.  Just gorgeous!  Our last stop was in Portsmouth NH, which was another quaint seaside town.  We thoroughly enjoyed the eateries, shoppes, and Prescott Park where they were doing an outdoor play of "Annie".  You sit on lawn chairs or blankets right at the water's edge to watch the play that takes place at the outdoor amphitheater for $5.00.  Ken and I hope to go back to watch it next weekend.  We loved this area.  All of these southern areas were much less crowded and more affordable than Ogunquit and its surrounding places.

Pictures from the cliff path!

Downtown Portsmouth!
Quite a sign for the Brewery in Portsmouth!
Beautiful garden in the Park in Portsmouth!
The outdoor theater where Annie was playing.  You can
actually see Annie if you look closely!
More of the gorgeous gardens!  The people in this area
take great pride in their flowers!

We had never seen such small bronze statues!  This was a
boulder in the park where the Cliff Path began.  It is people
doing different activities on the beach!

Back to Willie by 7:30 to play 2 games of Upwords before calling it a day.  We saw so many beautiful areas and sites today!

Overcast Day So It Was Relaxing!

The planned day's activities had to be changed due to the weather.  The four of us got together around 10:15 and it was foggy, overcast, and rather cool.  We seem to be in this weather pattern since Monday.  We didn't see the sun at all today nor did we get out of the 60's.  We decided to go to the Rachel Carson Wildlife Preserve and take the mile hiking trail.  As soon as we got on the trail the rain showers began.  We headed back to car to get some rain gear, but I decided the 3 of them should take the walk while I waited in the car.  Just didn't feel like getting wet and didn't seem to be too interesting of a walk for me.  I was happy to just relax.  It did stop raining soon after they started back on the trail, but they did agree that it wasn't an overly exciting walk except for a couple they met who had a very positive outlook on life and adventures.

We planned to got to York to see the Dubble Lighthouse, and enjoy a lobster meal outdoors at a little place on Perkins Cove, but it started to rain again.  Not a day for hiking or eating outside, so we went back to Willie to eat lunch and decide on our plans for the rest of the day.  It was supposed to get partly sunny with a high of 81, but that never happened.  Instead, it remained overcast and so cool and then rainy.  We played Cue Me and Upwords at our picnic table under the awning.  What a silly, fun time!

Sam is "announcing" each move Kathy is making during the game!

Ken was going to build a fire to cook our dinner, but it really started to rain.  So, Kathy and I made supper indoors and we were able to eat outside under the awning.  Only ate around 8:00, so after we did dishes and chatted about our possible plans for tomorrow (still a 50% chance of showers), we called it a night.

Turned out to be a relaxing day with plenty of laughter and fun just sharing time together!

Hope to take a ferry ride to Peaks Island tomorrow, but the predicted weather may change those plans.  We shall see!!!!

Great Bike Ride!

Today was another overcast day with temperatures in the high 60's to low 70's.  The good part was no rain!  So our plans for today were able to be completed.

Sam and Kathy got to Willie around 10 and we were on our way in Diesel with our 4 bikes on the back to head to the Eastern Bike Trail that started near Kennebunk.  We had packed snacks and lunches for our adventure.  The trail was beautiful and we saw many interesting things.  The bull frogs were noisy and active along the way.  Ken saw a deer (at least he said so), plus we saw colorful mushrooms, beautiful flowers, picked wild raspberries, saw many butterflies, a turtle with a snail caught on his mouth, and even a porcupine!  We rode a total of 16 miles on the well maintained gravel trail.

These frogs were so busy and loud!  They actually were
mating, not wrestling!!!!

Such a colorful mushroom!

If you look closely, this turtle has a snail stuck
on his mouth.  Ken used a stick to remove it for
him.  (It probably was his dinner!)

These were so sweet!

After the ride, we went through the town of Kennebunkport and were unable to find a place to eat our lunch.  So, we continued on to a little working lobster harbor, Cape Porpoise, where we ate lunch sitting on a rock overlooking the harbor.  While there we went down the rocks to the small "beachy" area to look for sea glass.  We found many pieces, but most of them were extremely small.  Ken helped to tie up a large sailboat and enjoyed talking to some of the lobster fishermen on the pier.  There was 1 restaurant on Cape Porpoise, but other then that it is just a working lobster harbor place.

What a luncheon view!

We could see this lighthouse from the rock where we ate lunch!

Looking for sea glass!

Ken become a skipper for the sailboat!

The restaurant at Cape Porpoise!

Came back through Kennebunk and all of us were ready to rest.  We got together at Willie around 7:15 to have dinner together.  Ken built a fire for roasting corn on the cob plus a rack of ribs.  What a feast when you add potatoes cooked on the fire and fresh strawberries with ice cream.

This was such a wonderful day!

Great 1st Day in Wells, Maine!

Ken and I were up by 7:30 and made our cooked breakfast outside.  Sunny 1st thing this morning, but most of the day was overcast and cool - only in the low 70's when the sun was out.  Kathy and Sam were here by 10 and we got ready to leave the CG and head out on our bikes to ride about 1 1/2 miles to Moody Beach.  Walked along the beach looking for shells and then back on our bikes to ride over the foot bridge and into the center of Ogunquit.

Walking out to Moody Beach!

So, where do we want to go next?????

Riding bike over the little walkway!

Parked our bikes at the police station and walked along the water's edge on the Marginal Way.  What a gorgeous paved walking path along the coastline.  So many beautiful homes, flowers, and beautiful cove areas with huge rocks.  Walked about 1 mile to Perkins Cove, a nice seaside town with many nice shoppes, restaurants, lobster boats, etc.  Sam and Kathy treated us to lunch at Oarweed Restaurant to celebrate Ken's retirement.  What a nice thing for special friends to do for us!  We would highly recommend that restaurant where you eat outside with a phenomenal view of the cove and ocean.  The food was exceptional too!

So many gorgeous flowers along the path!

What a view from the Marginal Way!

Unique rock formations!

Such a small beach with a unique setting for the 2 lifeguards!

Beautifully maintained pathway with views of the rugged
Maine coastline!

Not a bad place to sit and have a great lunch and retirement
celebrations!!!!

Lots of lobster boats in Perkins Cove!

We walked on the path and rode our bikes back to the CG.  It was a cool day, but not rain until some light showers around 7.  Spent time planning our activity schedule for the rest of the week.  So many possibilities of things to see and do in this area.

Tyler, a 24 year old in the trailer behind us, started a fire and invited us to join him.  His parents will be returning on Thursday to the CG.  So, we all had snakes and/or smores.

It was a fun 1st day and so good to share with special friends!

You Have to Love Maine!!!!!

Ken and I spent all day Saturday working around the house and loading Willlie for our trip to Moody Beach in Maine!  Quite a busy day and it was sooooo hot!!!

Because of the heat, Willie was 96 degrees inside and we decided we should probably leave in the early morning to beat the heat while traveling!  So, we got up at 3 AM and were on our way by 4.  It was warm already, but it got a lot hotter as the day progressed!

The ride to Maine was rather easy and on all main highways.  We arrived at the Moody Beach CG around 1:00 and it was in the 90's.  It is a nice CG and our site is a large one on the end of a row with plenty of shade.  Our camping neighbors are from the area and are very friendly and helpful.  Kathy and Sam got here around 5:30 and stopped here at the CG before heading to their motel about 2 miles north.  We made supper together and called it a night around 9.  Ken and I were very tired after such an early morning rise!  We were very thankful for the air conditioning!

Looking forward to a great week in the Moody Beach area.
