Day 52 - Gorgeous Place to Visit - Red Rock Canyon

Ken and I got up at 6:30 and the 4 of us were on our way in our CRV to Red Rock Canyon about 45 minutes from Duck Creek Campground!  Nice to have a shorter ride today than yesterday!

I spent most of the drive talking to my mother and sister regarding my father. He is doing well, but he still has a kidney stone that is blocking the urine flow. Because of him not having a bladder it gets a bit complicated as to how to get rid of the stone.  The doctors are still conferring on what should be done - maybe nothing!  All in all, he is on the road to recovery and hopes to be back to Masonic Homes later this week.

Red Rock Canyon is an amazing area.  We stopped at the Visitor's Center upon arrival and we all agreed that it is the best one we have ever seen.  The amount of info both inside and out is incredible and the movie was well done too!

I like the way they did the sign!

View from the car on our way to the Visitor's Center!

This "caravan of cars" was on its way to the entrance of
Red Rock Canyon.  Looked like a fun way to drive through
that area.

The different colors on the rocks was beautiful!
Taken from the inside of the Visitors Center!

They do have big turtles in the Canyon!

.....and big and lizards you can wrestle!

We got back in our CRV and started the drive on the 13 mile scenic loop, making numerous stops along the was to check out the scenic vista areas.  The red rocks are gorgeous, reminding us somewhat of Sedona.

We stopped at Calico Lookout for our 1st up close and personal look at the rocks.  Then onto Sandstone Quarry where mining was done very a relatively short period of time. It just wasn't profitable, even when they tried to use the railroad to get the sandstone our of the area.   Our last stop was Willow Springs Picnic Area and Lost Creek.  There we were able to see the pictographs.  After finishing the drive on the loop trail we headed back to the CG arriving around 1.  It was a short day for this group.  These 1st 5 photos are from Calico Point where we took a short walk to get up close and personal!

Looks like the beautiful red rocks in Sedona!

Just Amazing!

Balancing Act!

These next photos are on the way and at Sandmine Quarry -

Looks like they had to be painted!!!!

Gives you some perspective of how large these blocks of
sandstone really are!!
Photos from the Lost Creek area -

The ancient pictographs!

If you look closely, the upper round rock looks like the face
of a seal and below that and to the left maybe a monkey's face.
The group thought I might be very hungry or dehydrated!
They just don't have an imagination or "artistic side"!

After having lunch in Waldo, Ken and I went to Wal-Mart for needed groceries before leaving tomorrow morning for Zion National Park.  Ken spent time outside preparing for our departure and I tried to "catch up" on my blog and downloading of photos.  Also talked to Deb and Shirley back home since they both had surgery recently and Shirley goes again tomorrow for cataract surgery.

Over to Gregorys around 7:30 to play games. Women won Skip-Bo and Pinochle.  We got back to Waldo at 9:15 and went to bed.  It has been a busy 2 days in this area.  Onward tomorrow to Utah and Zion National Park for 1 week. Hopefully we can slow down our pace a little.

  1. I am neither hungry or dehydrated & even before the whole picture was scrolled down I thought "that looks like an otter or seal face"! But I must say I don' see the monkey face but I do see a lizard head just below & to the left (they are against each other)! Doloris
