Saturday - Cloudy Day But Perfect for Hiking!

Bria and Cali must have been exhausted from yesterday, because they only got up at 8:45!  It was a good thing, because Ken and I WERE exhausted and needed the extra sleep!

We got ready while the girls played on our tablets.  I made pancakes for Bria and Cali and then offered them a taste of my pumpkin pancakes.  Wow, they liked them and each wanted one of them too!  They got ready for our trip to Bushkill Falls while we cleaned up.  Then they headed outside to play the ball toss game I had brought along.  They do such a good job of playing together!

There was a prediction of some rain later today, so we worked together packing lunches and by 10:30 we were on our way to Bushkill.  We did make a stop at the nearby Turkey Hill to get cups of hot chocolate.

Ken and I had never gone to Bushkill Falls but because some of the main falls here in the Delaware Water Gap were closed, we decided to "bite the bullet" and pay to see the privately owned fall's.  Well, it was well worth it.  The many trails on the property and how well they are maintained was amazing.  They had so many trees that had fallen during the noreaster, but because they are privately owned and do not have to water for funding, they are able to get a contractor in quickly and get the work done.  You could easily see how much damage was done, all the trees that came down, and the repairs that were needed on the fencing and steps along the trails.  The actually had a helicopter come in and out for 1 week taking out the huge fallen trees!  (Sounds like big bucks to me!)

We decided (all 4 of us) to hike the red trail, which was the most strenuous and the longest, 2 1/2 miles.  Let me tell you, Bria and Cali were real troopers.  They loved the hike and didn't complain one time about the length of the trail or the 1,267 steps we had to climb along the pathway.  We got to see numerous waterfalls and all of them were beautiful, but the Bushkill Falls, the main attraction, was exceptional.

All along the pathway you saw newly constructed fences and
walkways due to fallen trees hitting the walkways and doing
so much damage!

So beautiful as you walk!

Our 1st view of Bushkill Falls, the largest falls
in Pennsylvania!!

We loved sharing nature with Bria and Cali!

PawPaw and Grandma enjoy hiking with these 2 "troopers"!

The red trail was the longest and most strenuous
at Bushkill, but that was the one the girls wanted
to do.  It was 2 1/2 nukes and included 1,267
steps!

Cali wanted to "relax" a little!

There were probably about 7 or more falls along
the red trail!

More beautiful falls....

....and more!

Saw these mushrooms along the way!

Then I introduced the girls to the art of cairn making, because I created many of them on our travels!
Cali enjoyed helping Grandma!

This was a large area where many folks had made cairns, we
just wanted to leave our "mark" too!

You can never see too many waterfalls!

We did 1,267 of these type of steps on this hike!

I can't imagine the work and cost to create all these walkways,
steps, fences, etc.

After the hike, we enjoyed the picnic lunch we had packed and then celebrated our completion of the red trail by having ice cream.  On the way back to the CG we stopped at a small creek to get more river rocks.  Ken and Bria spent more time skipping stones and they are getting very good at it. Cali and I decided to do more cairn building and we built some great ones!  We wanted to let people know that we had been there!

I think Cali enjoyed the ice cream!

2 of Grandma's creations!

Cali's was special too!

Back to Wilbur around 3:30 and it was shower time to get rid of the bug and tick spray.  Because we had a late lunch and plenty of healthy snacks along the trail, we decided to play UNO which Bria and I won by a large margin.  The girls decided they wanted hot dogs for dinner, so Paw Paw started a fire for grilling them and having s'mores.

The girls spent more time playing ball and then we ate supper outdoors.  Dessert was those delicious s'mores!  More card playing before watching the movie, "Mamma Mia"!  It was 10:30 when it was finished and we all went right to bed.

Our campsite was a nice one with lots of trees and a great
fire pit area!

What a special day with some very special young ladies.  We are so impressed with their hiking ability and willingness to do so many different things.  Also, they really enjoy each other and play so well together!
