Day 8 - Downtown San Antonio

We got an early start this morning because I had set the alarm for 6:45 instead of 7:45.  But that was a good thing, for we had a relaxing morning and still had time to work on the last 4 stops n this westward adventure.  We did some rearranging of the route and finalized which campgrounds we wanted to stay in at those locations.

The 4 of us got on the bus at the entrance to the CG at 9:30 and rode about 20 minutes to downtown San Antonio.  We walked about 1/2 mile to the 1st stop of the day - the Mexican Market.  Stopping there at the beginning of the day was a good choice, because by the time we left it had gotten so crowded.  The market was a great experience and so colorful!!!!  We enjoyed going in and out of the shoppes and checking out all the food vendors.  The music was extremely entertaining too.  Chuck had Melissa and I try some "tasty tidbit" and wouldn't tell us what it was until after we had taken a sample - cow intestines.  Yuck!!  We made sure he tried it too.  Ken was too smart to fall for that one. (they both knew what it was before we ate it!) Before leaving the market around 1:15 we shared some mini tacos that were delicious.

The entrance to the Mexican Marketplace!

Great look, huh????  Wen we put the hats back on the table
we noticed the sign that read, "No photos wearing our hats"!
Oops!!!!

Looks like a rainbow of colors!

Of course we had to check out the Mexican Bakery!

An old time bar/saloon at the market.

Melissa is loving her fried Oreos!  Ken and I had a bite
and they were delicious!

Note the pointy toes on these shot glasses!  There was a "cowboy"
in the store wearing boot ust like these
Enough said!!!!!

Very good authentic Mexican type music!

By the time we left the market it was so crowded!

From there we walked towards the River Walk, stopping to see some of the beautiful buildings along the way with gorgeous architecture.  The River Walk has been on my bucket for years, so how exciting to actually be experiencing it!  Soon we were on the River Walk, enjoying a section that is not very commercial but offers breathtaking landscaping, scenic older building, and not nearly as commercial as part of the walk.  Then we entered the outdoor eatery area and decided to take a river barge cruise on the "loop" part of the River Walk to get some history of the area and the making of the Walk.  It was a 1/2 hour ride and very enjoyable and informative.

The Town Hall

The Courthouse!

A Beautiful Cathedral in downtown San Antonio that was
built in 1738.  Still have services there!

The "remains" of these heros, including David Crockett
and Jim Bowie, are in this vault inside the cathedral.

Hard to describe how beautiful the River Walk is in
the downtown area!

So many bridges!  Chuck and I are enjoying the view
from the top.  Hi, Ken!

The outdoor stage with seating across the San Antonio River,
all part of the River Walk!

Even the ducks enjoy being downtown!

That is Chuck's head on our barge cruise!

The garguiles on top of the building below that chase away
evil spirits and bad luck!

1st skyscraper in the downtown area!

Can't imagine the vision needed to create this incredible
River Walk, or the time and money needed!

When the boat ride was completed, we decided it was time for lunch.  We ate along the waterway at the 1st eatery that was established along the River Walk, Casa Rio.  Time for more Mexican food and again, it was delicious but so much food and so "filling"!  Left there and walked to The Alamo for a look at that landmark.  I wish I would have paid more attention in my history classes!  I feel so "stupid" on USA history!  We enjoyed the tour of the Alamo and walking through the gardens.  By then we were all exhausted (might have been the frozen margaritas at lunch) and walked about a 1/2 mile to the bus stop, arriving back at the CG around 6 - one long day!

Ken decided he needed to try the local beer~

So good, but too much!

The Mengor Hotel, where Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders
used to go for drinks!

Even the horses get in a festive mood!

The famous landmark, The Alamo!

Beautiful flowering cactus in the gardens at the Alamo!

All of us decided to take a nap and get back together for games at 7:30.  We had a silly night of game playing (the women won all 4 games) and then we headed back to Waldo at 11.  It was a great day with so many special times!

  1. Can remember that same River Tour boat ride...I think we even ate at the same restaurant ? I went into the cathedral to say a few thankful prayers. It was truly a beautiful place. Thinking in a day or so, your blog will be full of post from wonderful places that we have on our wish list? Texas was as far as we have traveled together in the RV! Than you again for sharing...it is fun following you!

  2. I was at this place last week. This is such a joy as a place for food! I had a beautiful time here. It reminded me of another center for private parties Los Angeles. A beautiful, wonderful place that had excellent atmosphere.
