Day 44 - Scenic Drive on Route 1

Ken and I were up at 7 and after cooking breakfast, cleaning up and packing a few snacks, the 4 of us were on our way to the Monterey area in Gregory's CRV. It was a cloudy morning with temperatures in the upper 50's.  We stopped in Hollister for gas and then stopped at a campground before getting to Monterey that was where Melissa's parents camped when her father worked at the Naval School in Monterey.  They actually had an annual site in that campground for the motorhome so they could stay there when he worked at the school.  What a beautiful campground and you could walk from there to the beach on the Pacific Ocean.  We checked out the CG and the beach.  What a wonderful place to stay.

Our 1st view of the Pacific Ocean.  It was a bit chilly!

From there we drove to Point Lobos State Park, and again we were very fortunate as far as getting in.  We were the 3rd car in line at the gate and they only left cars in as others were leaving.  3 came out when we arrived, so we could get in quickly.  Then we found a parking spot at a great place for getting on a trail.  This park was amazing. We walked on wonderful, well-kept trails that went right along the Pacific coastline and we saw so many sea lions and seals, plus a few otters.  It was incredible.  The rocky coastline of the Pacific Ocean is a sight to behold too!  We were probably there 2 or 3 hours and enjoyed every minute of it.

You walked on trails....

...and on the rocks.

Some of the seals needed a rest!
'
Doesn't look like a very comfortable place to sleep!

You can't walk down to this cove on the trail.  They are giving
the seals and sea lions their privacy without all us humans
invading their space!

The beach area certainly looks more comfy than the rocks!

They surely like to cuddle!

You want my picture????

Okay, I am done with the picture taking.  Time to snooze!

This sea otter looks happy and content in the water!

All the colors of the beautiful wildflowers, the gorgeous rock formations, and the blue Pacific make this place very special.  A must stop if you are in this area!

So many colorful flowers on the hillside and in the rocks!

Almost looks like a bonsai tree!

The 4 of us were so glad we had stopped at Point Lobos!

It was 2:00 when we left and we were all starved!  Melissa, Chuck, her mother, and their daughter had eaten at Rocky Point about 8 years ago and she remembered the unbelievable view and good food.  So that was our next stop and the view was unbelievable, as well as the food.  It is hard to describe how much we enjoyed our lunch.

That was the view from our table and we were inside!

Then we continued on scenic Route 1 enjoying more of the coastline and crossing over the Bixby Bridge that was built in 1932.  It has been the backdrop for numerous commercials.  We passed a functioning lighthouse too!  What an memorable day!  Chuck and Melissa have done such a good job of showing us some of their favorite places as well as experiencing new ones with us.  (They had never be to Point Lobos!)

A unique, high bridge!

We were back to the CG by 7, but we did enjoy passing the large fields of lettuce, grape vineyards, orchards, etc.  They are everywhere!  Ken posted on Facebook and I downloaded photos and sent an e-mail to our granddaughters with pictures of somethings we had seen that I thought they would enjoy!

Fields of lettuce!

Red  lettuce we get in Spring Mix!

So many grape vineyards and we aren't even in Napa Valley!

At 8 the 4 of us got together in Waldo to play Sequence Dice (W), Pinochle (W), and then Skip-Bo, which the men finally won.  We called it a day at 10 and plan on going back to Monterey tomorrow morning to Melissa's dad's former place of employment at the Naval School to see the room that the school named in honor of him.  How special!  Then we will stop at Costco for some supplies!

Just a few extra photos -

Saw this momma and her 2 fawns when we got to our CG!

There are hundreds of gophers here in the CG.  They scamper
into their holes as quickly as possible when they hear you!

This RV might need a little work.  Looks like it could
belong to the Clampets!  (I think I am showing my age!)
