Island Trip with Many Sea Glass Treasures!

What a fantastic day for the 4 of us! The weather was perfect Sunday - sunny and in the upper 80's.  We picked up Sam and Kathy at their Hotel at 7:45 and drove Diesel with the 4 bikes to Casco Ferry Lines in Portland Maine!  Our goal was to be on the 9:15 Ferry.  Sometimes the best laid plans just don't work out!!!!  When we got within 3 blocks of the Ferry, there was a 1/2 marathon race in the center of town and we were at a stand still for 1/2 hour.  By the time we finally got in the parking garage (which we would not recommend doing with a 3/4 ton truck - the clearance is just too close for comfort!!!!) we missed the ferry by 15 minutes.  So, we relaxed and took the next one at 10:15 with our bikes and "sailed" to Peaks Island!!!

Waiting to get on the Ferry with our bikes!

The 1st island we passed was Fort Gorges!

The Happy and Excited Ferry Boat Riders!

After 20 minutes we arrived at Peaks Island!

This island is a special place!  We immediately peddled to a beach area that was recommended as a great spot for finding sea glass.  We had left early so we could be there at the beginning of low tide, the best time for finding the glass.  You can only imagine our excitement when we started finding many pieces of sea glass in a very small area.  Ken had read about another beach on the other side of the island that was supposed to be a sea glass area.  So we got on our bikes and headed that direction.  Bingo!!!!!  Another winner for sea glass.  We found many large pieces in this spot.  We were so hot and sticky from spending so much time on the sand and in the hot sun, but we were excited about our finds!

The 1st small beach where we found seaglass!

What a beautiful site!

The 2nd beach where we found larger pieces of seaglass!

Peaks Island Honey!

From there we rode further back on that side of the island to find the little table near the sea where they sold jars of Peaks Island Honey using the "honor system".  Ken was excited about this find!!!!  Then we pedaled to the center of town for lunch at the Cockeyed Gull where we ate on the deck overlooking the water.  Great food with a wonderful waiter and a fantastic view.

Not a bad lunchtime view!

A view of the ferry while eating lunch!

We decided to follow the road (traveled by only a few cars but numerous golf carts) all along the water, stopping to take in the sights and build another rock monument.  Also walked along a trail that took us back to a bunker that was probably used in WWII.  After riding about 9 miles today, we got on the 5:00 ferry to go back to Portland.  Ken was very happy when we were out of the parking garage!  The attendant asked Ken if he had parked it in the space for Compact Cars.  Ken said yes but he really had to get his speed up!!!!!!!

Lots of "how did they do it" stone monuments had been
built around the coastline!

About a 1/2 mile trail (fairly primitive) to go back to the bunker!

The size of it was pretty amazing!

Couldn't resist taking a photo at this large piece of driftwood.
We set the camera on a rock, programmed it, and snapped away!

Stopped for homemade ice cream at Big Daddy's on our way back and it was delicious.  Kathy and I had salty caramel which had homemade chocolate covered mini pretzels in caramel ice cream.  It was unbelievable.  Ken enjoyed his Maine blueberry ice cream.  Dropped off Sam and Kathy and were back to the CG by 7:15.  What an excited, fun-filled day and we have "treasures" to prove it!!  Sam and Kathy came by to load up their bikes for the trip home tomorrow.  What a great last day of their trip to Maine.  We are so thankful they were willing to do this trip with us, even though they didn't have a camper and had to stay in a nearby Motel.  This has been another very special trip with the Frankhousers!!!!!!
