Today was a fun filled day with exciting new adventures! After breakfast, we drove to the Mount Morris Dam which was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers and completed around 1952. It prevents floods to numerous towns and villages in this area and also the 3rd largest city in New York, Rochester. What a wonderful and informative tour we had of the dam with a enthusiastic and phenomenal tour guide, Jules. She had a great presentation along with a tremendous sense of humor. We walked up to the top edge of the dam, took an elevator down 17 stories (170 feet) to the inside tunnels of the dam, and then down another 30 feet that actually was under the Genesse River. Can't imagine all the work and knowledge needed to construct and maintain the daily functions of a dam. This was a free tour that lasted about 1 1/4 hours and worth every minute.
View from the top of the dam. Water is so low! |
This shows the water on the other side of the dam that flows towards Mount Morris and eventually to Rochester where it empties into Lake Ontario! |
We were on a balcony down 170 feet looking up to the top of the dam! |
Looking across the dam towards Letchworth State Park! |

For those of you who remember, this chair reminds me of Edith Ann from the old Laugh In TV Show! |
BINGO! We found the geocache! It was back a Dead End Road and hidden behind a tree! Now we can leave Letchworth State Park - Ken found a geocache!!! |
Ken started a campfire as soon as we returned and we enjoyed another delicious supper. After clean-up we played more ladder golf with the men being victorious. Decided it was time to have our 1st s'mores of the trip and they were so good.
Earlier we had started to do some preparation for tomorrow's departure and before heading in for the night, Ken decided to put in our awning. Unfortunately, our awning did not have the same plan. One side disconnected from the mechanism when Ken started having it retract. 2 screws had fallen out and the left side of the awning was just hanging. We are sure 1 of the screws must have fallen out at another time! We put in new screws, but when we went to electrically retract it the pulley on the other side had bent from the weight of it hanging disconnected on the other side. Now we had a major problem. We could not get it to retract! After doing some hammering to try to straighten the mechanism and both Ken and Sam pushing on it with all their might while I retracted it slowly, they finally got it totally retracted. It took quite along time and much work on Sam and Ken's part. We are so thankful that we will be able to leave tomorrow with an awning that is back where it belongs for travel. No more awning for this trip!
After all that excitement we decided to call it a night at 10:15.
