Tuesday - Miserable Weather Day at Mystic, CT!

It started raining lightly during the night, was a bit off and on in the early morning, and then we had heavy rain with wind starting around 10:30.

It was a rather leisure morning at the CG only getting up at 6:45 (Ken had read about an hour during the night), so we watched the morning news and then did our devotions.  We both got ready and then had a light breakfast around 9:30.  Ken wanted to pay some bills via the internet and I spent time changing photos in the hanging frames in Wilbur.

We left at 11:15 (it was pouring!) and drove to Clyde's Cider Mill, only 1 mile from the CG.  What an interesting place and the grandson of the founder was more than happy to tell us about their family "operation"!  It was established in 1881 and is the oldest steam powered cider mill in the US , operated by the 6th generation of the Clyde family.  They are only open from September till December and must do a tremendous business.  The process of turning the apples into juice was fascinating to watch.  Today was a rainy, cloudy day, a perfect day to press the apples because there were no bees around!  Can't imagine what it is like on a warm sunny day, but they did say there can be swarms of bees!  Not very great working conditions!  Their equipment is rather antiquated, but they work it with such precision.

This is Clyde's Cider Mill.  The store is the front building and
the rear one is where they press the apples into juice!

Apples, apples, everywhere and they used lots
of different varieties, whatever is available
for harvesting!

The apples go through a wash after coming down a conveer belt
from an enclosed truck outside the building.  They go through
a masher (peels, seeds, stems and all) and then come out
this tube to be spread out in the large piece of cheesecloth!

The mashed apple enclosed in the cloth is then covered and
they repeat this until they have 4 layers!

On the left is the mashed apples and on the right the 4 "skids"
are being pressed to remove the juice.  The entire table swings
around!

This is the stem engine that does makes all of this happen!

After the juice has been extracted, these gentlemen put the
"waste" on a cart and push it to the large garbage container
at the end of this track!

We went into their shop to have a delicious apple cider doughnut and some mulled cider - what a treat!

A very nice, old time shop!

Lots of cider to be bottled!

Delicious apple cider doughnuts!

From there we went to Studio Jeffrey P'an, an unbelievable glass blowing studio and gallery.  His vases, glass sculptures and jewelry are so unique and beautiful.  The design and color in each piece is breathtaking.  Of course, you have to be rather wealthy to purchase his large pieces.  Jeffrey was not there today, which was a bit disappointing, but a young 20 year old that has worked for him for several years was so friendly and willing to answer and questions and then tell you lots of additional information.  It really was a special experience!

I loved all the colors and patterns in his
glasswork creations!

The young gentleman with his back towards us is very talented
in glass blowing.  He was expert that was there today!

It is really hard to get an appreciation of the designs and
gorgeous colors in each of his pieces!

These fish are $350.00 each and a couple from Florida
came in to the gallery and bought 85 to hang in the hallway
in their home.  They paid for 2 of the glass blowers to come
to their home to hang them - I can't imagine!

This piece was beautiful with all of its etching!
It is priced at $23,000.  We held our breath
when looking at it!!!  Most of his vases and
larger pieces were $3,000 to $4,000.

It was really raining and blowing when we left there, definitely not a day to be walking around going in and out of shoppes.  Ken drove me to the Scrapbook Cove and I had fun checking out their paper, stamps, projects, die cuts, etc. while Ken sat in the car reading and posting.  From there we decided to go to Mystic Pizza for lunch having read about the movie that was filmed there and in the surrounding area in 1988 starring Julie Roberts.  Amy Jones, the screenwriter, chose Mystic Pizza as the focus and setting for her story of the lives and loves of 3 young waitresses when she was summering in the area.  The pizza shop did well before the movie, but you can imagine how busy they were after the release of the hit movie.  As the story goes...."The Pizza That Made the Movie Famous"!  I must tell you our small onion/meatball pizza was fabulous, one of the best I have ever had.

Mystic Pizza Shop

You just have to get a picture with the movie name and
their logo!

This pizza was absolutely delicious and we ate the
whole thing!!!!!

We decided to head back to the CG because it was still raining heavily and the winds had gotten even stronger!  We did stop at the cider mill to get a 1/2 gallon of their apple cider and mulling spices.  My ladies card club will be treated to hot mulled cider, but obviously it will be local Lancaster County cider.

Back to the CG at 3:30 where we played 2 rounds of Hand and Foot and I am winning by 500 points.  Hopefully we will finish later this evening.  Ken did some reading while I downloaded photos and worked on this blog.

We made salads for dinner and finished our game of Hand and Foot and I was the winner - YES!  I talked to my sister and they were on their way home from picking up their new motorhome.  There were a few things that needed corrected before they left the dealership, but all went well and they are very excited.

After dinner, Ken did dishes and I showered so it wouldn't take me so long tomorrow morning to get ready for our departure and drive to Moody Beach CG in Ogunquit, Maine.  Hopefully it will stop raining (it really poured this evening) by the time we get up and will remain dry for the drive.

We watched The Voice and then I wanted to stay up to see the pilot of the new show, Amsterdam.  I was intrigued by the all the "hype" when they were advertising the show and anxious to see the pilot.  Ken went to bed to read.  It is an interesting show!

Looking forward to the next "leg" of our adventure!
